The Classic Edinburgh Boat Trip

Discover the Magnificent Firth of Forth by Boat

The Firth of Forth is Scotland's greatest estuary — a vast tidal inlet that stretches over 50 miles from Stirling to the North Sea. For centuries, it has served as Edinburgh's gateway to the world, and today it remains one of the most scenic waterways in the British Isles.

Our Firth of Forth sightseeing cruises depart daily from Newhaven Harbour, taking you on a captivating journey past Edinburgh's waterfront, under the legendary Forth Bridge (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and onwards to the wildlife-rich islands of the inner Forth.

With expert commentary from our local skippers, you'll learn about the bridge's incredible engineering, the strategic importance of Inchcolm Abbey, and the fascinating ecology of the Forth's marine environment — all while enjoying breathtaking panoramic views that you simply cannot experience from land.

Route Highlights

What You'll See on Your Forth Boat Trip

Every mile of our route is packed with history, engineering marvels, and natural wonders. Here's what makes this cruise truly special.

🌉

Three Iconic Bridges

Sail directly beneath the 1890 Forth Bridge (UNESCO World Heritage), the Forth Road Bridge (1964), and the stunning Queensferry Crossing (2017). See all three engineering masterpieces from a perspective few visitors ever enjoy — from the water looking up at these colossal structures spanning the Forth.

🏰

Inchcolm Island & Abbey

Often called the "Iona of the East," Inchcolm Island houses a beautifully preserved 12th-century Augustinian abbey — one of the best-preserved medieval monasteries in Scotland. On select cruises, you can step ashore and explore the ruins, the island's WWII fortifications, and its thriving seal colony.

🦭

Seal Colonies & Seabirds

The Firth of Forth is a haven for marine wildlife. Expect to see grey and harbour seals basking on rocky outcrops, colonies of guillemots and razorbills on cliff faces, and — during summer months — adorable puffins nesting on the islands. Our guides will help you spot and identify every species.

⚔️

Wartime History

The Forth was a crucial naval stronghold during both World Wars. You'll pass the remains of anti-submarine defences, wartime gun emplacements on Inchcolm, and learn about the dramatic air raids and naval operations that shaped the estuary's modern history. Fascinating stories for history enthusiasts.

🏠

Cramond & Granton Waterfront

As we depart Edinburgh, enjoy views of the historic fishing village of Newhaven, the redeveloped Granton waterfront, and the charming village of Cramond with its tidal island walkway. Your skipper will share tales of smugglers, fishwives, and Edinburgh's rich maritime heritage.

📸

Unmissable Photo Spots

We deliberately slow down at the most photogenic locations so you can capture perfect shots. The Forth Bridge framed against a Scottish sky, seals posing on rocks, and the dramatic cliff faces of the Forth islands — your camera roll will thank you. Open-air upper deck is ideal for photography.

What to Bring

Scotland's weather is famously changeable, so we recommend coming prepared for the best experience on the water:

  • Warm layers: It's always cooler on the water than on land — bring a fleece or jumper even in summer
  • Waterproof jacket: Light sea spray is common, and Scottish showers can appear quickly
  • Camera: With fully charged batteries! You'll want to capture the bridges, wildlife, and coastline
  • Binoculars: Great for wildlife spotting (we provide them on the Full Discovery cruise)
  • Sun protection: On clear days, UV reflection off the water can be surprisingly strong

Getting to Newhaven Harbour

Newhaven Harbour is located in north Edinburgh, approximately 10 minutes' drive from the city centre and easily accessible by public transport:

  • By bus: Lothian Bus routes 7, 10, 11, 16, and 36 stop within a 5-minute walk of the harbour
  • By tram: The Edinburgh tram stops at Newhaven (opened 2023) — just 2 minutes from the harbour
  • By car: Free on-street parking available on Pier Place and surrounding streets
  • By taxi: Approximately £8–12 from Edinburgh Waverley station

Accessibility

Our main vessel provides step-free access to the lower deck, an accessible toilet, and priority seating areas. If you have specific accessibility requirements, please contact us at least 48 hours before your trip so we can make appropriate arrangements. Companion carers travel free on all cruises.

Cancellation Policy

We understand plans can change. Our cancellation policy is designed to be fair and flexible:

  • 7+ days before: Full refund
  • 2–6 days before: 50% refund or free rebooking

FAQ

Firth of Forth Boat Trip — Common Questions

Yes! Puffins nest on the islands of the Firth of Forth — mainly on Craigleith and the Isle of May — from April to August. Our Island Explorer and Full Discovery cruises pass close to nesting sites. For the best puffin sightings, book between late May and mid-July when the birds are most active feeding their young.
Our sightseeing cruises are very family-friendly. Children under 5 travel free, and ages 5–15 receive a 25% discount. The Bridges Cruise (1.5 hours) is ideal for younger children, while older kids love the Island Explorer with its chance to go ashore on Inchcolm. Life jackets in all children's sizes are available.
We sail directly beneath the Forth Rail Bridge, giving you an extraordinary up-close perspective of this Victorian engineering masterpiece. You'll be close enough to see the rivets and paintwork of the iconic red cantilever structure towering 110 metres above you. It's a truly awe-inspiring experience that photographs beautifully.
We offer a reduced winter service from November to March, with weekend-only departures at 11:00 and 13:00 (weather permitting). Winter cruises have a special charm — fewer tourists, dramatic skies, and excellent seal-spotting opportunities as the animals haul out on exposed rocks. Heated cabins keep you warm and comfortable throughout.
Yes — our Island Explorer and Full Discovery cruises include a 90-minute stop on Inchcolm Island, where you can explore the medieval abbey ruins, WWII gun emplacements, and the island's wildlife. The abbey is managed by Historic Environment Scotland; entry is included in your cruise ticket. Sturdy footwear is recommended for exploring the island paths.
